About

Created by the artist, Sumedh Rajendran during his residency in the 2014-2016 Vancouver Biennale, THE OTHER SIDE was installed in a community centre on Vancouver’s West side, a centre servicing multicultural communities. This artwork references the neighbourhood fences and hedges, a common landscape feature throughout Vancouver, that frequently serve as divides and isolate individuals. THE OTHER SIDE marks Rajendran’s first visit to Vancouver.
Rajendran is based in New Delhi, India. He has a BFA from the College of Fine Arts, Trivandrum, Kerala, 1994, and an MFA from the Delhi College of Art, 1999. His work hints at the wider context of human experience while engaging with the possibilities of sculptural experimentation. He incorporates diverse materials including wrought iron, ceramic tiles, leather, tin sheets, cans, rubber, cement, concrete, and steel, and investigates circulated images from social and political contexts to explore their hidden ideologies. His early work critically examined the predicament of migrations, displacements, angst, discrimination, and arguments between different layers and structures of society.
His solo shows include Dual Liquid, Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi; Chemical Smuggle, Grosvenor Vadehra, London; Final Call, Anant Art Centre, New Delhi; Street Fuel Blackout, Sakshi Gallery, Mumbai; and Pseudo-Homelands, Rohtas Art Gallery, Lahore. His museum exhibitions include Astrup Fearnley Museum, Norway; HEART, Herning, Denmark; Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, New Delhi; and in the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, Kochi, India.
